The Google Chrome cast is a digital media player developed by Google. It allows users to stream audio, video, and other content from Internet-enabled devices to a high-definition television or monitor by using either an HDMI cable or micro USB cable. With the addition of this small device, your old television can be transformed into an Android TV in minutes — meaning you can stream all your favourite apps right on your big screen. Here’s how.

Step 1: Check if your TV is compatible with Chrome cast

If you have an Android device, you can check if it’s compatible with Chrome cast by opening the Google Home app, selecting the device, scrolling to the bottom and checking the System Version. If you have an IOS device, you can check compatibility by opening the Chrome cast app, going to settings and looking for the System Version.

Once the device is compatible, you’ll be able to cast your media to another device by placing it between the two devices or using your phone as a smart device. Also, if you want to use your media on your big screen, then you need a Chrome cast Adapter. If you have a TV that doesn’t support Full HD 1080p, then you can play it using a similar process. Rather than streaming material to your TV, you’d simply use a Flash player which plays content at 720p and above. Alternatively, you could use an app such as Into The Core which allows you to stream play online content to your TV. Although whilst trying to implement these programmes into my TV shows, none of them played within the acceptable quality range of 60-720p.

Creating your own playlist is a good way of using a Chrome cast. The Chrome cast allows you to cast any content you download from the internet onto your TV. Even if you’re a Mac user, you can use iTunes to play your iTunes catalogue (Air Play supported). Similarly iTunes can be used to download content you download from the internet onto your big screen, which are then displayed in pictures as shown in the video below. In both cases, the picture quality is not high enough to be watched on a big screen, but it’s perfectly usable for watching videos. For example, you can use a small wireless projector to change the picture on your TV screen.

Step 2: Connecting the Chrome  cast to your TV

Plug the Chrome cast into an open HDMI port on your TV.

lift the cover to reveal your Android device.

Insert your Android mobile app of choice (but we’ll be using the Tab IMPACT Media Player) and cast the video file to your TV.

Top-left: Enter the video file you want to stream and cast.

Top-right: Output the video to your television using the Video -> USB Video Target output option on your computer.

Middle-left: Select your USB Video Output.

Middle-right: It should automatically detect your TV and begin streaming.

Finally, during setup, the Chrome cast app will also offer instructions on device setup and Wi-Fi connection. Keep an eye on our Google Chrome cast ULTRA guide! For more information on what the media file locations are, check our Chrome cast help article.

YouTube Videos are supported natively by the Android TV OS (formerly the Android OS, created by Google), but to access YouTube on your TV, you’ll need to download a suitable third-party YouTube app to your smartphone — but the Chrome cast device does not support downloads. Instead, for YouTube on your TV, open the YouTube app on your smartphone — and voila, you’ve got music, showing YouTube videos on your big screen! Including YouTube Videos in the video upload process on a Chrome cast is simple: open the YouTube app on your Android tablet or Android TV and select the folder containing the videos you wish to stream.

Lift the cover to reveal your TV.
Green: Select the video folder you wish to upload to YouTube for video storage on the TV. Orange: Select the device and metadata you wish to upload to YouTube.

Step 3: Setting up Chrome cast with your TV

After you’ve plugged your Chrome cast device into your TV, you’ll want to set it up. The first step is making sure that your device is connected to the Internet. In order to do that, you’ll need to connect it to your Wi-Fi network and sign into your Google account.

In order to select a Chrome cast-compatible TV that you want to use, you’ll need to head to the Google Home app’s menu and tap the “Menu” button at the bottom of the screen. At the main menu, you might notice a section specifically labeled “TVs”. Tap that and you’ll be taken to the setting for the TV you wish to set up.

From here, you can choose whether you want the TV to work with Google Assistant or no Google Assistant at all. You can also use voice controls to browse for and add entertainment channels, play music, and ask Google questions. The Chrome cast will update the display of the TV with in-app content once you have selected what you’d like to stream. If you’re curious about Alexa features, read on. Step 4: Downloading apps for your TV

Downloading apps to your TV is one of the best things you can do to make your TV seem new again. When you download apps to your TV, you can stream videos, play games, and watch sporting events on a bigger screen. You can even watch movies and listen to music.

However, these things take up huge amounts of space on your TV — so it’s better to hide them back on your smartphone and tablet instead of downloading them onto your TV. Here are a few ways you can get apps onto your TV in no time.

Install Google Chrome cast

If you’re a Chrome user, you can use Google’s Chrome cast to cast your favourite content to your big screen. The Google Chrome cast allows you to cast content directly to a TV set using the wireless connection provided by the phone you’re using.

First download and install the Google Chrome cast app on your smartphone, tablet or mobile device. Next, connect your smartphone or tablet to the Wi-Fi of your TV using either a coaxial cable, Ethernet cable, or your TV’s built-in network connection.

When prompted, agree to the Google Terms of Service, and then select the Chrome cast device. You’ll need to sign into your Google account as well, but you’ll be cleared of any subscriptions to your TV service. Next, you’ll need to download the Chrome extension.

Once you’ve downloaded the Google Chrome cast app, click on the little “Google Chrome cast” icon found at the top right of your browser. It should look something like this:

Or it can look like this, if you’ve already set it up:

Now you should see the [Chrome cast] option at the top right of the page:

Step 5: Enjoy streaming media, and playing games on your big screen with Android!

Before you go any further, you need to connect the Chrome cast to your television’s HDMI port using a cable. If you don’t have a television, then Google’s online store can help you buy an HDMI cable and an HDMI video adapter directly from Google. It’s best to buy the perfect HDMI cable to match your TV’s specs. Having down-scaled all my FHD (1,920 x 1,080) in-display: UHD BD/BD-R/BD-RE content to 1080p is not that easy, considering the huge differences in how my 1080p input settings translate to about 480i (720p).

Once your Chrome cast is connected to the TV’s HDMI input, you can turn on the appliance by pressing the ‘power’ button and waiting until the device LEDs light up. You should see the Chrome logo appear on your television screen, and you should hear the device boot up and display the Android home screen. You can then start navigating to your apps by opening the Google Play Store or the Amazon App Store app on your smartphone. Tips If you see those small digital clocks in the status bar while controlling the Chrome cast using your phone’s screen or voice commands, then you’ve got the calibration box ‘enabled.’

Navigating to your available apps is always easier when Google has included them with its TV app. However, most traditional media players don’t come with an Android TV version of the app. Luckily, it’s actually very easy to install an Android TV version of your favorite media player. Whether it’s an app such as Vegas TV or Plex, or even simple apps such as Microsoft Phone, YouTube or Discord, Android TV provides an option to stream content through its built-in Google Assistant, allowing you to navigate and change your device’s settings via voice commands.
